Cancer pain can be treated in multiple ways.

  1. Bisphosphanates form the backbone of treating bone metastases and also in multiple myeloma. They strengthen the bone and also fight the cancer in the bone. Denosumab is another drug which is used for this purpose. Administration of one of the bisphosphanates called Zoledronic can be done at home under expert nursing care. Good hydration and good kidney function is a prerequisite for administration of zoledronic acid.
  2. Few patients may receive chemotherapy along with above agents. The choice of chemotherapy depends on multiple factors and the type of tumor.
  3. Radiation to the affected bone is also effective in relieving pain. It can be only one sitting or 5 sitting or 10 sittings, based on few parameters.
  4. Good combination of pain medication goes a long way in controlling pain and improving quality of life.
